68 Nigerians awarded 2026 Chevening, Commonwealth scholarships

The UK Government has awarded 68 Nigerians the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to study a wide range of master’s degrees and PhD programmes in the UK in 2026.

In a statement on Wednesday, the British High Commission said pre-departure ceremonies were held in honour of the scholars in Abuja and Lagos.

According to the mission, 12 scholars received Chevening scholarships, while 56 scholars have been awarded the Commonwealth scholarship so far.

Chargée d’Affaires, British High Commission Abuja, Ms Vicky Seymour, congratulated those who succeeded in securing scholarships through the highly competitive application and interview process.

“Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars have bright futures, and we see their time in the UK not only as an investment in them as individuals but also in the future of Nigeria.

“On your return to Nigeria, I know you will go on to do great things, just as your alumni have done before you.”

She said it was her hope the scholars would bring their wealth of experiences back to Nigeria and use them to achieve remarkable things for the country.

Chevening scholar Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex, said her selection as a Chevening Scholar was the profound validation of a three-year journey marked by resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to change.

According to her, beyond the academics, Chevening is a call to action, a platform to build global networks, immerse in volunteerism, and return to Nigeria fully prepared to champion good governance and inclusive development.

“This honour is not just a personal milestone; it is fuel for a lifelong dedication to human rights and community transformation.”

Commonwealth scholar Abubakar Umar, who will study special educational needs at the University of Exeter, said the scholarship was special for him, being a person with a hearing impairment.

He described the scholarship as a journey to an inclusive system, the UK standard.

“From an inclusive application to an inclusive post-selection process.

“A journey of resilience and inclusivity has just begun,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria has a large alumni base with over 5237 alumni across both scholarships.

Applications for 2027/2028 Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are currently open, and applications can be submitted via https://www.chevening.org and https://portal.csccentralonline.org.uk/application respectively. (NAN)
