Yvonne Nelson: The rise, the romance, the quiet fade of Africa’s once most-sought-after screen goddess

By Benjamin Njoku

Few names in African cinema evoke nostalgia like Yvonne Nelson. The leggy Ghanaian actress was once the toast of the continent. At the peak of her career, she was shuttling between Accra and Lagos, jumping from one movie set to another, and dominating social media with admiration and love-struck comments.

For years, Yvonne Nelson was a household name across Africa and beyond. But just as her star was climbing highest, it began to dim, following a high-profile breakup with Nigerian Afropop star Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, and the birth of her daughter in 2017 with her ex-boyfriend, British photographer. That turning point altered the trajectory of her blossoming acting career and slowly pushed her out of the spotlight.

Yet, even in semi-retirement from the big screen, Yvonne Nelson remains a force in African cinema. Fans still remember her for her stunning looks, statuesque frame, and signature natural Afro hairstyle.

In her memoir, “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,” the mother of one opened up about her relationship with Iyanya, a romance she once described as a perfect love story.

“We had a decent relationship with all the dreamy aspects one could imagine. I truly felt that he was the one I could spend the rest of my life with,” she wrote.

“His act of tattooing my initials, YN, on his wrist meant a lot to me, as it showed his dedication. Even in his hit song ‘Ur Waist,’ he openly expressed his desire for me.

Breakfast in bed, public declarations, and matching tattoos, it all felt unbreakable, until it wasn’t.”

The relationship began to witness cracks when Nelson said she started receiving anonymous calls whenever she left Iyanya’s place. The caller would inform her that another actress was visiting, and sometimes spending the night.

That was the beginning of the end.

She eventually moved on. Today, Yvonne Nelson is a proud mother to a beautiful daughter and a successful entrepreneur and author. She’s still active on social media. But Yonne Nelson is no longer the ever-present, hot and adorable screen siren of yesterday.

Like a flower that blooms in the morning and withers by evening, her time at the center of Nollywood and Ghallywood’s glare was brief, bright, and unforgettable.

Still, her legacy endures, not just in the movies she left behind, but in the memories of a generation that watched her light up screens across Africa.
