UNL: Argentina coach, Scaloni hails ‘great’ Ronaldo after Portugal beat Spain
Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, has reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal victory at the UEFA Nations League.
The manager congratulated Ronaldo, noting that the Portuguese will only stop great when he retires from the game.
Ronaldo led Portugal to victory in the competition on Sunday night, netting one of the goals that took the match to extra-time and eventual penalty shootout where Roberto Martinez’s side won 5-3.
The 40-year-old superstar was impressive throughout the Selecao’s Nations League campaign, scoring eight goals in nine appearances.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, the coach congratulated the Portuguese football icon, saying via Bolavip, “They [Messi and Ronaldo] will stop being great only when they retire.
“Beyond their age, their presence means a lot — not just by playing. I congratulate Ronaldo and Portugal, it was a great match.”
Argentina will play Colombia in the World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, with Lionel Messi part of Scalani squad.
The 39-year-old supervisor started from the bench when Argentina played Chile in the World Cup qualifier on June 5.
