South African midfielder Jayden Adams has died aged 25, just a fortnight after competing for his nation at the World Cup.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder started South Africa’s first two matches of the tournament against Mexico and Czechia.

He was a substitute as South Africa beat South Korea to secure their place in the knockout stages, but was an unused sub as his nation were defeated 1-0 by Canada in the round of 32.

Details surrounding Adams’ passing remain unclear, with the South African Football Players Union writing in a statement: ‘The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams.

‘Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction.

‘His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.

‘We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched.

‘South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace.’

Adams, who won nine caps for his country, came through the ranks at Stellenbosch before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns last year.

The 25-year-old was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that won the bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast in 2024.

Adams’ former club Stellenbosch also confirmed the news in a statement on the club’s website. It read: ‘It is with profound sadness that Stellenbosch Football Club has learned of the untimely passing of our former player Jayden Adams.

‘The Club wishes to extend its deepest condolences to Jayden’s family and loved ones, as well as everyone at Mamelodi Sundowns, and calls for their privacy to be respected during this unimaginably difficult time.

‘A prodigious footballer, he made his professional debut for Stellenbosch FC at the age of 19 and went on to make 139 senior appearances, helping the Maroons lift the Carling Knockout trophy in 2023.

‘After joining Sundowns in 2025, Jayden continued to showcase his immense talent, and he recently represented South Africa at the highest level at the FIFA World Cup in North America.

‘A proud flagbearer for the Cape Winelands, Jayden leaves behind a lasting legacy in Stellenbosch and an enduring impact on South African football. He will be deeply missed, and never forgotten.’

Speaking to local outlet Soccer Laduma, Adams’ mentor Brendine Johnson paid tribute to the young midfielder following his tragic passing.

‘At this moment, things are still raw, you know, things are still raw,’ Johnson said. ‘The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now, they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone.

‘This passing has ripped everybody apart, returning from the World Cup just now, and then got such news, you know. I had a close conversation with him on Thursday, the guy was really positive on returning back, and being able to return after the World Cup and go, you know, being a CAF champion, knowing what lies ahead, he was prepared. He doesn’t waste time away, being at home with his family.

‘So at this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Yes, I can tell you that he passed on. Nobody expected this.’

South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie also paid tribute to Adams in a lengthy statement.

‘It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25,’ Mckenzie said.

‘South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.

‘I will always remember watching Bafana’s match against Czechia in Atlanta. I recall noting how unusually quiet Jayden seemed on the bench in the second half, after he had been substituted – it was only afterwards that we learnt he had taken to the field that day carrying the fresh grief of losing his grandmother, Marianna, who had passed away only hours before kick-off.’

Whilst at the World Cup, Adams was mouring the passing of his 72-year-old grandmother, Marianna Adams, who died a day before South Afrtica’s match against Czechia.

A statement at the time, the SAFA said: ‘The South African Football Association (SAFA) is saddened to hear aout the passing of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams’ grandmother, Marianna.

‘The 72-year-old Marianna Adams passed away a day before the South African senior men’s national team faced Czechia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A match played at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday 18 June 2026. She passed away in a hospital in Stellenbosch and will be laid to rest on Saturday, 27 June 2026.’
