Oliseh warns against Super Eagles captains sitting on the bench

Former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has criticized the trend of captains sitting on the bench.

Oliseh described it as “an anomaly” while speaking on Channel Sports on Sunday.

According to him, the skipper has to be on the pitch leading the rest of the team.

“This I want to call an anomaly, and it started when we began having on-the-bench sitting captains,” Oliseh said.

“You can’t have that. You can’t have your captain sitting on the bench.

“In other words, you are saying it is an assistant that is leading the team.”

Ahmed Musa, who is the current captain of the Eagles, only returned to the squad ahead of the 2025 Unity Cup for the first time since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations last year.

Musa came off the bench in the 62nd minute of a 2-1 win over Ghana, before leaving camp to get married.
