Kano State athletes are setting their sights on surpassing their previous achievements as they prepare to compete in the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games,” scheduled to take place from May 16 to 30, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The state’s contingent, comprising 173 athletes, 97 coaches, journalists, organizing secretaries, and 15 government officials, is slated to depart the ancient city of Kano on May 14 and 15.

Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Fagge—popularly known as “FIFA”—disclosed the state’s readiness during the reception of the Festival’s Torch of Unity by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Faruk, alongside Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaji Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other senior officials.

Fagge revealed that Kano athletes will participate in 20 events, including both individual and team sports such as judo, boxing, cycling, karate, kung fu, swimming, taekwondo, kickboxing, dambe, kokawa (traditional wrestling), para powerlifting, golf, shooting, handball, volleyball, football, gymnastics, and chess.

He assured that the athletes have undergone intensive training aimed at optimizing their performance and boosting the state’s medal count at the prestigious national event. He urged the team to uphold discipline, display exemplary sportsmanship, and represent Kano State with pride and dignity.

Commending Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his consistent moral and financial backing, Fagge pledged that the commission remains committed to the development of sports across the state and the nation.

He also lauded the efforts of Commissioner Kwankwaso, Special Adviser on Youth and Sports Alhaji Sani Danka, and other key stakeholders for their unwavering support and encouragement. Fagge reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to restoring Kano’s sporting excellence and nurturing future champions.

The sports commission chairman concluded by cautioning athletes and coaches against any conduct that could tarnish the state’s image during the festival.
