Kano tragedy: NSC to enforce stricter safety measures for Sports Festival Teams

The National Sports Commission, NSC, has announced that henceforth, participating contingents in future National Sports Festivals must obtain insurance cover, and vehicles must be mechanically certified and insured before participating in the country.

This is coming on the heels of the tragic loss of 22 athletes from Kano State in a motor accident while returning from the recently concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, known as the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, which took place in Ogun State.

The NSC, in a statement issued by the director of press, Kehinde Ajayi, said the new safety regulation is mandatory for all participating contingents.

“Contingents must obtain comprehensive insurance coverage, and all vehicles used for official transport during the Sports Festival must be mechanically certified and fully insured. This requirement has been communicated to all participating states and will be strictly enforced moving forward,” she stated.

The statement noted that a compliance audit will take place ahead of future festivals to ensure all contingents adhere to essential safety, insurance, and welfare standards.

Additionally, the NSC said stronger monitoring mechanisms will be implemented during national events to prevent further tragedies.

Ajayi disclosed plans by the commission to convene a post-Games safety roundtable with all State Sports Commissions, saying, “This meeting aims to review travel protocols and exchange safety best practices.”

The statement noted, “This incident must not be in vain. It must inspire all levels of government, federal and state authorities alike, to enhance the systems that protect those who dedicate their strength and spirit to represent our nation in sports.”

“While the transportation arrangements for state contingents are the responsibility of individual state sports councils, this incident highlights the urgent need for a coordinated national framework for safety and welfare.”

The Director of Press further revealed that the Commission has opened communication with the Kano State government and will ensure a close partnership is maintained between them in response to the unfortunate incident.
