Argentina star’s English footballer girlfriend reveals who she’ll support in World Cup clash

Kelci Bowers is an unusual position on Wednesday night as her boyfriend will be taking on her home country when Argentina play England.

The huge World Cup semi-final is played in Atlanta, with the winners taking on Spain in Sunday’s final after they beat France in Arlington on Tuesday.

English fans at home and in Georgia will be roaring on the Three Lions, although Bowers will be quieter than most.

She is the partner of Argentina defender Marcos Senesi, who left Bournemouth this summer to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old was a late call-up to the World Cup squad after an injury to Marseille’s Leonardo Balerdi.

He is not in Lionel Scaloni’s first choice starting XI, but did play against Jordan in the group stage, winning his fourth cap for his country.

Even on the bench, Bowers has been at the World Cup cheering him on, but now faces the awkward situation of Senesi taking on her own country.

Bowers is a footballer herself, having also played for Bournemouth until the end of last season when she left the club.

The 22-year-old played for the Lionesses at youth level and was also at Chelsea earlier in her career.

Now she is being questioned about her loyalties ahead of the World Cup semi-final and she has done her best to sit on the fence.

Speaking on TikTok, she said: ‘Hey guys, I thought I would jump on here and address the situation that every single person is currently asking me: England or Argentina?

‘So, of course, crazy situation, didn’t think that this was going to happen. It’s kind of crazy that England are playing Argentina in the semi-final, that’s not happened forever.

‘This situation is very unique for me of course, being English and England making it to the semi-final is a crazy accomplishment and I’m super proud of my country.

‘Of course, my partner is playing for Argentina. So, with anyone in any relationship, whatever your partner does, you’re going to support them of course.

‘For me, playing football, being able to come to the World Cup and travel around has been amazing. Supporting Argentina, embracing the culture in Argentina and posting on my social media, wearing the Argentina shirt is something that I’ve been doing. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

‘Of course, now England are playing Argentina, there is some controversy about what I’m going to do. I’m going to go to the game, I’m going to enjoy the game, I’m going to respect both teams, I’m going to be cheering on for my partner. I’m going to be wishing England the best game and I’m just going to enjoy it guys.’

She added that she doesn’t actually watch much football, saying: ‘For me, if you know me, you will know that I don’t actually watch football. I play football and I love football but I don’t actually watch it. For me, it’s a bit of a different situation.

‘It’s a weird one guys. I totally get why everyone is saying, what are you going to do now? Like I said, I have the best intentions for both teams and whatever the outcome is, we’ll just see. There’s no more for me to say.
I thought I’d just come on and say that. I appreciate you guys, I appreciate the love you’ve given me over the last few weeks.’
