Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as the state governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as his running mate.

In a post via his verified X handle on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu described the pair as a team equipped to sustain and advance the state’s development.

The governor stated that the choice of the candidates reflects the administration’s commitment to continuity, competence, and inclusive leadership.

“The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” the governor said.

He added that the candidates represent “the strength, diversity, and future” of Lagos State.
Sanwo-Olu praised Hamzat’s contributions to governance, describing him as a loyal and effective partner in the administration.

“Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance and a steadfast advocate for progress,” he said.

The governor also commended Sonayon-James, describing her as a respected leader with a strong track record in sustainability and grassroots development.

“Joining him as his running mate is Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, a respected leader, sustainability professional, and grassroots champion whose commitment to community development and youth empowerment reflects the aspirations of many Lagosians,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

According to the governor, the duo possesses the qualities required to consolidate on the gains recorded by the current administration.

“Together, they bring the experience, competence, and energy needed to build on our achievements and move Lagos forward,” he said.

As preparations gather momentum for the forthcoming governorship election, Sanwo-Olu called on APC members, stakeholders, and residents of the state to rally behind the ticket.

“I invite party faithful, stakeholders, and all Lagosians to support this team as we continue our shared mission of building a Greater Lagos,” the governor said.

Recall that Hamzat emerged as the party’s candidate at the primary election held at the APC secretariat, Ogba, on May 21, polling 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes cast, while his challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, secured one vote.
