President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on several Nigerians, including journalists, activists, lawyers and military officers linked to the June 12 pro-democracy struggle.
Tinubu announced the awards during his Democracy Day address on Friday.
Among the recipients are the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, and former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.
Among the journalists are Lade Bonuola, Femi Kusa, Olatunji Bello, Louis Odion, Segun Babatope, Sam Omatseye, Bola Bolawole, Richard Akinnola, George Mbah, Dr Niran Malaolu, Gbemiga Ogunleye, Muyiwa Adekeye, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju and Ike Okonta.
The recipients also include Barrister Ayoka Lawani, Tunde Fagbenle, Sir Ademola Osinubi, Debo Adeniran, Chief Ayo Opadokun, Chief Ralph Obiora, Ose Osayande, Barrister Osa Director, Prof. Sylvester Odion-Akhaine, Dr Osagie Obayuwana, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, Barrister Titus Mann and Joe Igbokwe.
Dr Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi were honoured posthumously.
Tinubu also recognised military officers described as the “soldier-democrats of the June 12 struggle.”
They include Major General MA Garba, Brigadier General Lawal Jaafaru Isa, Col Umar Farouk Ahmed, Col Sambo Dasuki, Col Lawan Gwadabe, Brigadier Jonathan Ndam Temlong, Col Musa Shehu, Major General Chris Eze, Major General Harris Dzarma, Col Isa Jibrin, Maj. General Joseph Oshanupin, Col Olusegun Oloruntoba, Lieutenant Colonel Happy Kefas Bulus, Col J Okai, Col Emmanuel Ndubueze, Lt Col Yakubu Muazu and Brigadier Yahaya Abubakar.
The June 12 Democracy Day is marked to commemorate the 1993 presidential election and the struggle for the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria.
