2027: LP Would Retain Abia If Election Held Today — Chairman

The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Mr Peter Azubuike, has said the party is poised for a landslide victory in the 2027 general elections, claiming it would win “before 2 pm” if the Independent National Electoral Commission conducted an election today.

Azubuike stated this on Monday while speaking with journalists at the LP State Secretariat in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

He said the party had resolved its internal crises and was now fully mobilised for the next electoral cycle.

Describing the LP as the most grassroots-driven party in the state, the chairman cited its current electoral footprint as proof of its dominance.

He said, “If INEC conducts an election today, we will win before 2 p.m. because we are the only political party with a strong grassroots presence. We have 184 councillors, 17 local government chairmen, and 20 members of the Abia State House of Assembly. That is evidence of our widespread acceptance and grassroots support.”

Azubuike said the party adopted the direct primary system to ensure transparency and avoid rancour in candidate selection ahead of the 2027 elections. He also dismissed reports that only one nomination form was sold in some constituencies.

“It is not true that only one form was sold. In several constituencies, multiple aspirants purchased forms. In fact, not all sitting lawmakers secured the ticket. A clear example is the Osisioma/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, where the incumbent did not get the return ticket,” he stated.

According to him, the party has invested heavily in building its structures from the ward to the state level and is confident of another “massive victory” in 2027.

The LP chairman also affirmed that the Senator Nenadi Usman-led national leadership is the faction recognised by INEC.

He said the party had already been granted access to the INEC portal to upload candidates, which he described as confirmation of its legitimacy with the electoral body.

Azubuike reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy, grassroots mobilisation and effective leadership as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections.
