Wizkid, Seun Kuti Trade Words In Heated Fela Legacy Debate

A public feud has erupted between Afrobeat superstar Wizkid and Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, centering on the legacy of the late Nigerian music icon and activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

The dispute, which played out largely on social media, has sparked intense debate among fans and observers of Nigeria’s music culture.

The controversy began after Seun Kuti, Fela’s youngest son, spent several days responding to claims by Wizkid fans who argued that the global success of the singer surpassed the historical impact of his father. Seun pushed back strongly, insisting that Fela’s influence went far beyond commercial achievements.

According to Seun, comparisons between Wizkid and Fela fail to account for the latter’s lifelong activism, political resistance, and cultural revolution. He highlighted Fela’s extensive discography of over 50 albums, his confrontations with military regimes, and his enduring role as a voice for the oppressed in Nigeria and beyond.

The exchange escalated on January 20 when Wizkid appeared to respond directly to the ongoing commentary. In a post that quickly went viral, the singer used a dismissive phrase widely interpreted as an insult toward Seun Kuti’s father, further inflaming tensions between both camps.

Wizkid also reposted content from Motunrayo Kuti, Fela’s daughter, which mocked Seun Kuti’s parents. The repost was seen by many as an attempt to undermine Seun’s moral authority in defending his father’s legacy, while others viewed it as an unnecessary escalation.

The feud has since drawn widespread attention across social media platforms, with fans of both artists engaging in heated arguments. While Wizkid’s supporters point to his global streaming numbers, international tours, and Grammy recognition, Seun Kuti’s backers argue that such metrics cannot be used to measure cultural and political impact.

Observers note that the clash reflects a broader generational tension within Afrobeats, where modern commercial success is often weighed against the genre’s roots in protest, resistance, and social commentary.

Fela Kuti is widely regarded as the pioneer who used music as a weapon against injustice, a role many believe should remain beyond comparison.

Despite the heated argument, some voices within the music community have called for restraint and mutual respect. They stress that Nigeria’s musical heritage is broad enough to celebrate both Fela’s revolutionary legacy and Wizkid’s role in taking Afrobeats places

As the debate continues, the incident has reignited conversations about legacy, respect, and the meaning of greatness in music. Whether seen as rivalry or a clash of values, the Wizkid–Seun Kuti exchange underscores the deep emotions attached to Fela Kuti’s enduring influence on Nigerian and global culture.
