The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has just arrived at the meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), shunning ongoing confrontation between him and the host, Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State Governor.
The meeting being held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja comes after a hot exchange of words over the crisis in the PDP.
Wike and Bala Mohammed have previously been seen on opposing sides of the party’s internal disputes, making the former’s attendance particularly significant.
The minister has been particularly blamed for being behind the crises in the PDP, with calls for his expulsion unsuccessful so far.
Wike, who arrived shortly after Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum; Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang; Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke; and several influential former governors, including Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Achike Udenwa (Imo), had arrived and went straight into the meeting.
THE WHISTLER reports that the agenda includes resolving internal divisions that have weakened the party’s unity and prompted an exodus of key members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The leaders are reportedly focusing on healing factional rifts, reinforcing party discipline, and restoring public confidence in the PDP as a viable alternative ahead of 2027.
Particular attention is being given to the strained relationships within the National Working Committee, especially concerning the roles of the National Secretary and the Acting National Chairman.
Discussions are expected to include possible restructuring of the NWC and deliberations on whether to confirm Ambassador Damagum as the substantive chairman or seek new leadership.
Also on the agenda is the formulation of the party’s roadmap for the 2027 elections, including strategies for internal consolidation and potential alliances with other opposition parties.
While past consultations have leaned toward strengthening internal cohesion over forming external coalitions, the meeting may revisit this stance in light of evolving political dynamics.
The upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State is another focal point, as party leaders aim to mobilise resources and grassroots support to secure a win that could revitalise the party’s image and momentum nationwide.
