The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the employment of 34 resident doctors for a fixed seven-year residency training programme.

The group represents the first batch of the 60 medical residency trainees approved for employment in eight faculties and specialities across FCTA hospitals.

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

Olayinka noted that this is the first time such employment is being conducted outside the Health Management Board, which expands opportunities for medical professionals in the territory.

The newly employed doctors are distributed across various departments, including five in psychiatry, four in internal medicine, one in general surgery, one in anesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.

He said, “This is the first time this is being done outside employees of the Health Management Board, thereby giving doctors more opportunity and bringing more competent hands into healthcare delivery in the FCT.

“Among the 34 employed, five were psychiatry department, four in Internal Medicine, one in General surgery, one in Anesthesiology, eight in Family Medicine, six in Ophthalmology and nine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.”

Olayinka also disclosed that the FCTA Civil Service Commission will soon begin the recruitment process for the remaining 26 resident doctors.

These, he said, will include one for psychiatry, four for internal medicine, eight for general surgery, five for anesthesiology, and eight for paediatrics.
