Why We Are Opposing Wike’s Mega Rally – Bayelsa Govt
The Bayelsa State Government has given reasons why it is opposed to the planned mega rally in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital to be held in support of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
It stated that while the Bayelsa State Government was not opposed to gatherings as guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution, a situation where an individual has “insulted the ancestry of a people, sparking widespread outrage, the government must take proactive measures to maintain peace in the state.”
The Bayelsa State commissioner for youth development, Alfred Kemepado Nimizigha who made the government’s position known while appearing on a television programme accused the minister of the FCT of making statements capable of causing disharmony among the people of the state adding that with such statements, the state government would not want any political rally that would threaten the peace in the state.
“We are only saying that let us not promote any form of gathering because you cannot be sure of what comes of the gatherings, the statement made by the minister has provoked anger, and resentment,” he said.
He said political campaigns have timetables, adding that the statement credited to the FCT was not acceptable and caused uneasiness in the state
According to him, the statement did not go down well with the people of the state explaining that Governor Douye Diri was not against anybody coming to Bayelsa state, “we only want to protect the peace.”
The mega rally is being organised by. a group known as the New Associates and is backed by the zonal secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
