Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have vowed not to succumb to what they described as the Federal Government’s tactics of intimidation, marginalisation, and political exclusion.
They made this declaration during the 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP, which took place on Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, accused the current administration of orchestrating a political climate marked by subtle threats, deliberate provocations, and attempts to stifle opposition voices.
“In the face of persistent pressure, our members remain steadfast and unwavering,” Mohammed stated.
“There is no form of intimidation or persuasion that we, as elected governors and party members, have not encountered. Yet, we remain resolute in our commitment to the ideals of democracy and good governance.”
The governor lamented the wave of defections and behind-the-scenes coalition talks that have posed challenges to party cohesion, but insisted the PDP has stood firm.
“Despite ongoing attempts to destabilise our ranks, the PDP continues to show unity and focus. Unlike other political parties that are riddled with divisions and internal crises, we remain a united front,” he added.
Highlighting the party’s recent activities aimed at enhancing its visibility and relevance, Governor Mohammed noted that the PDP Governors’ Forum has been holding strategic meetings across the country, addressing national issues, and issuing communiqués.
“In recent months, we’ve held meetings in Plateau, Taraba, Oyo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bauchi States. These engagements reflect our proactive stance on national matters and our refusal to be cowed by the oppressive tendencies of the current administration,” he said.
Mohammed praised the party’s leadership for their resilience and described the 99th NEC meeting as a landmark event in the struggle for democratic preservation.
“This NEC meeting is not just routine. It represents a triumph of democracy over adversity, a reaffirmation of our collective resolve to defend the Nigerian people against economic hardship, insecurity, and misgovernance,” he said.
He further disclosed that the governors are working on establishing subcommittees to enhance the party’s operational capacity and policy development.
“Our commitment is not only to resist intimidation but also to deepen our internal governance. We are forming subcommittees to drive reforms and initiatives that will reposition the PDP as the viable alternative for Nigerians,” Mohammed revealed.
The governors also took time to acknowledge the sacrifices of PDP leaders and party faithful across the country, assuring them that their efforts are not in vain.
“To our leaders and loyal members, we thank you for your patience and sacrifice. The road is rough, but we are making progress.
“No amount of intimidation or exclusion by the Federal Government will deter us. We are prepared to endure criticism, hardship, and resistance in service to the nation,” he concluded.
