US offers $11 million reward for Ukrainian cyber actors
The United States and allies have launched a manhunt for 28-year-old Ukrainian cyber actor, Volodymyr Viktorovych Tymoshchuk, accused of perpetrating international ransomware schemes.
The Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, on Tuesday announced a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest.
The INL, under its Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program, is also offering a reward of up to $1 million for intel on other leaders of the Nefilim, LockerGoga, and MegaCortex ransomware.
Their delinquent activities, according to a criminal indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York, targeted hundreds of victims in several countries.
Tymoshchuk’s malicious enterprises reportedly targeted companies located in the United States, Canada, or Australia with at least $100 million in annual revenue.
A statement by the Department of Justice named Artem Aleksandrovych Stryzhak, 35, as a defendant in the indictment, which details the crime committed between December 2018 and October 2021.
The Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Europol, and the EU Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation are coordinating in the pursuit of Tymoshchuk and others.
The agencies are working with the authorities in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
