US Government’s Transfer of $220k Worth of ETH Stirs Market Speculation

US Government’s Transfer of $220k Worth of ETH Stirs Market Speculation

The U.S. government has once again stirred speculation in the crypto space—this time involving Ethereum.

On July 7, 2025, blockchain analysts detected a wallet linked to the FBI transferring 86.56 ETH (worth approximately $219,450) to Coinbase Prime, a platform used for institutional-level crypto transactions.

The transaction, timestamped at approximately 16:49 UTC, originated from a wallet beginning with “0xC55” and has been verified as being associated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The funds were sent to a known deposit address linked to Coinbase’s institutional trading platform.

While the amount isn’t significant by Ethereum market standards, such transfers by government entities often spark concerns about impending sell-offs. Historically, when U.S. authorities have moved seized crypto to exchanges, it has often preceded liquidation events—either for asset recovery or auction-related purposes.

At the time of the transfer, Ethereum was trading at $2,529.03, marking a 0.85% daily decline. The overall market capitalisation also dipped slightly to $305.29 billion. Though no official statement has been issued confirming a sale, the timing and destination of the transaction have led many in the community to brace for possible market volatility.

This activity mirrors a similar incident from June, when U.S. authorities transferred nearly 3,940 BTC (worth over $240 million at the time) to Coinbase Prime. That Bitcoin had been confiscated from convicted Silk Road drug trafficker Banmeet Singh and formally forfeited to the government earlier in the year.
