UNIZIK Convocation: SGF Seeks Nat’l Unity Integration Into Education Reforms

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has called for a reform of the educational curriculum that projects national unity and development.
Akume disclosed this on Wednesday while delivering his lecture on the subject ‘National Integration for Unity and Progress’ at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s (UNIZIK) 19th Convocation Ceremony in Awka, Anambra State.
The SGF was represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services, OSGF, Dr Nnamdi Mbaeri.
Akume stated that Nigeria’s unity and progress depend not on individual successes but on the collective and cohesive strength of its citizens to foster national advancement.
He stressed that education was key in promoting national integration and fostering mutual understanding and respect among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
“Universities, in particular, serve as microcosms of Nigerian society, where students from various ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds come together to learn and share ideas.
“Through education, we can teach the values of tolerance, respect, and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
The SGF further urged political, religious, and traditional leaders to prioritise policies that mitigate ethnic and religious tensions, foster cooperation, and positively influence public perceptions.
“As we celebrate the achievements of the graduating students today, let us also recognise the responsibility that each of us has to contribute to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
“You are not just scholars but custodians of the future. You have been equipped with knowledge and skills that can help bridge the divides in our society. You are the leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow and play a crucial role,” he added.
The convocation lecture, convened by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, kicked off the lineup of activities in the coming days.
The event was attended by the institution’s Chancellor, His Majesty Dr Jacob Gyang Buba; Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council Barr Monsur Kukoyi; former lawmaker, Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Ben Ndi-Obi, among other academics.
