The University of Port Harcourt has partnered with Chinese institutions to train Nigerians in the Chinese language, aiming to enhance their employability in Chinese-owned companies operating in Nigeria.

This collaboration was announced by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill, during a visit from a high-level Chinese delegation.

Professor Georgewill emphasised the importance of knowledge exchange and international cooperation, stating, “With the growing number of Chinese companies in Nigeria, it is only strategic to equip our people with language and cultural skills that make them more employable and competitive.”

He expressed appreciation for China’s interest in Africa, particularly in education, culture, and infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Consul General announced plans to establish a new Chinese Centre at the university, which will further cement educational and cultural exchanges between China and Nigeria.

He stated that the centre will provide students with greater access to Chinese resources, training, and opportunities.

Professor Liu Hongwu, leader of the Chinese delegation, emphasised the strategic importance of China-Nigeria cooperation.

He noted that the delegation’s visit aimed to inaugurate the “China Window”, a platform designed to give Nigerians broader access to the Chinese language, culture, and academic opportunities.

This partnership is expected to yield long-term benefits for both nations, promoting cultural understanding, educational exchange, and economic cooperation.

The VC in the votes of thanks added that the University of Port Harcourt’s commitment to this collaboration reflects its dedication to preparing students for the demands of a globalised job market.
