The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has commended Governor Alex Otti’s performance in office, particularly in the education sector, while seeking stronger collaboration between the institution and the Abia State government.

Leading a delegation of the university’s council and management team on a visit to the governor, Senator Ohuabunwa acknowledged Governor Otti’s commitment to education, citing his decision to allocate 20 per cent of the state’s budget to the sector for two consecutive years.

“You know when we speak, people would listen, not only in Abia State, not only in Nigeria, even within the ECOWAS Sub-region. We’ve seen the allocation of a 20 per cent annual budget to education and we are asking him to do more,” he said.

He emphasized that his remarks were not political but rather a reflection of Governor Otti’s impact as an alumnus of UNIPORT. According to him, the governor’s contributions to governance align with the university’s vision, making it eager to collaborate with him to ensure more Abia students gain access to the institution.

“So, we want to collaborate with him in a way that will align with the institution’s quest and zeal to make sure that we are bringing Abia students into the University of Port Harcourt,” he added.

Senator Ohuabunwa, who congratulated Governor Otti on his achievements, also extended an invitation to the university’s golden jubilee celebration later this year, where an endowment fund of ₦10 billion will be launched to address infrastructural gaps.

Receiving the delegation, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring the dignity of the Abia people, noting that all efforts made so far were geared toward that goal.

He also congratulated Senator Ohuabunwa on his appointment as Pro-Chancellor and commended UNIPORT for maintaining 50 years of academic excellence.

Governor Otti pledged to support the university’s initiatives in partnership with other alumni, highlighting the importance of education in driving societal progress.
