Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy

Real Madrid have confirmed that defender Ferland Mendy has suffered a hamstring injury ahead of their La Liga clash with Villarreal on Saturday.

Mendy sustained the injury during Real Madrid’s Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

The club confirmed on Thursday that the French defender has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury, dealing a major blow to the club’s aspirations towards the end of the season.

The statement reads: “Following tests carried out on Ferland Mendy today by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury in his left leg.

“His recovery will be assessed,” Real Madrid’s statement concluded.

Mendy is expected to be out of action for four weeks, he is expected to be unavailable for the league game against Leganes on March 29, the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg tie against Real Sociedad on April 1, and the La Liga clash against Valencia on (April 6).

The 29-year-old has been a key player for the club this season making a total of 27 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid as the club’s first-choice left-back.

Mendy will also miss out on international duty with France against Croatia in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

Real Madrid currently has four defenders on the sidelines through injury, with Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, and Jesus Vallejo also unavailable for selection.

The Los Blancos are currently in second place behind Barcelona on the La Liga table having played a game more, they are also in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
