U.S., Russia Exploring New Approach To End Ukraine War – Rubio

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the United States and Russia are testing a fresh approach to peace in Ukraine following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Malaysia on Thursday.

“I think it’s a new and a different approach,” Rubio told reporters in Kuala Lumpur, where both leaders held a 50-minute meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum.

“I wouldn’t characterise it as something that guarantees peace, but it’s a concept that I’ll take back to the president,” he said.

Without disclosing details, Rubio said the two sides exchanged ideas on a possible roadmap to end the ongoing conflict, which has stretched into its fourth year.

He described President Donald Trump as “disappointed and frustrated” by what he sees as Russia’s lack of flexibility in moving toward a resolution.

“We need to see a roadmap moving forward about how this conflict can conclude. We’re going to continue to stay involved where we see opportunities to make a difference,” Rubio said.

The meeting marks the second in-person encounter between Rubio and Lavrov since Rubio took office, following their first face-to-face in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, earlier this year.

The diplomatic efforts come just as the U.S. resumed shipments of defensive weapons to Ukraine after a pause attributed to Pentagon stockpile reviews —a move welcomed in Ukraine but met with unease in Russia, which continues to intensify its airstrikes across Ukraine.

Despite growing tensions, Rubio’s comments signal a possible shift in diplomatic posture, even as Russia remains under Western sanctions and scrutiny for its continued aggression in Ukraine.

Thursday’s talks also took place against a backdrop of worsening U.S.-Russia ties, with the Trump administration accusing China, Russia’s closest strategic partner, of enabling Russia’s military-industrial sector to rearm and sustain the war effort.

U.S. officials have charged that Chinese components and technologies are helping Russia replenish its weapons stockpiles.

At the ASEAN forum, Rubio reiterated America’s commitment to engagement in the Indo-Pacific but made clear that the administration’s focus remains on global security threats, including Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“The reality is that this century and the story of the next 50 years will largely be written here in this region, but that does not mean we lose focus on crises elsewhere — including Ukraine,” Rubio told Southeast Asian ministers.

While trade tensions and looming U.S. tariffs on ASEAN states featured in side discussions, Rubio’s central message, especially in his talks with Lavrov, was a diplomatic push to explore options for ending the war in Ukraine.

“The door to peace is not closed, but it will require imagination, commitment, and a genuine willingness to compromise — from all sides,” Rubio said.
