Truck Kills Seven, Injures 16 In Niger State
A truck accident in the early hours of Sunday claimed the lives of at least seven people and left sixteen others injured along the Agaie-Badeggi Road in Essa community, Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident, which happened around 3:00 a.m., involved a truck transporting grains allocated by the Federal Government.
The vehicle was also said to be carrying 36 male passengers traveling from Lagos to Kano.
Confirming the incident to journalists on Sunday, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, attributed the accident to the deplorable condition of portions of the Lambata-Bida road, particularly the unreconstructed sections.
He noted that the poor state of the road is believed to have played a role in the crash.
However, emergency response efforts involving NSEMA officials, villagers, and passersby were promptly launched.
Baba-Arah said that seven people were confirmed dead at the scene, while eleven others sustained serious injuries, while five additional victims suffered minor injuries.
The injured ones, he said, were transported to nearby health facilities in Badeggi and Agaie for treatment, while some received help from fellow travelers. Most of the deceased victims were claimed by their families shortly after the incident.
NSEMA had issued an advisory urging road users, especially commercial transport operators to exercise caution when navigating poorly maintained roads, particularly at night.
