Traffic Safety Watchdog Initiates Investigation in Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Software After Collisions
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Thursday.
Four collisions, one of which resulted in the death of a pedestrian, have been linked to the system.
The traffic safety watchdog announced that it was investigating Elon Musk’s EV car company over “failure of the system engineering controls to react appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions.”
The NHTSA reports four incidents where a Tesla vehicle crashed due to reduced visibility caused by sun glare, fog, or airborne dust.
One of these incidents resulted in a fatality when the vehicle collided with a pedestrian.
The majority of Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck model years are among the approximately 2.4 million Tesla automobiles that are the subject of the inquiry.
Although the manufacturer of electric vehicles pointed out on its website that the FSD software does not make the car autonomous, it is intended to enable “minimal driver intervention” driving.
One week has passed since Tesla CEO Elon Musk presented the much-anticipated robotaxi.
The elaborately orchestrated presentation at Warner Bros. Studios saw the billionaire showcasing a fleet of fully driverless vehicles without pedals or steering wheels.
The capacity of FSD to recognise and react correctly in circumstances involving decreased roadway visibility will be scrutinised by regulators.
They will also investigate whether there are any other past FSD crashes that happened in situations with poor visibility on the roadway and whether those circumstances contributed to the accident.
The NHTSA will evaluate if any changes from Tesla had an influence on the FSD’s performance in low visibility situations on the road, and whether Tesla evaluated the safety implications of any updates.
