Tinubu’s Administration “Irredeemably Exploitative, Insensitive and Anti-people” – PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday launched an attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing it as “irredeemably exploitative, insensitive, and anti-people” during its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The opposition party expressed grave concerns about Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation and worsening economic hardship under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, while announcing plans for its national convention scheduled for August 28–30, 2025.
In its communiqué on Tuesday, the PDP’s National Executive Committee strongly criticized the current administration’s handling of national security, stating that the party “condemns the worsening insecurity; the wanton killings, banditry, kidnapping, marauding of communities, and other acts of terrorism in various parts of our country, emboldened by President Tinubu’s apparent negligence and abdication of his constitutional duty.”
On the economic front, the party blamed government policies for widespread hardship across the nation. “NEC also laments the worsening economic hardship and extreme poverty in the country, occasioned by the ill-advised and ill-implemented policies of the Tinubu administration,” the communiqué stated, specifically citing the “hike in fuel price, wanton increase in electricity tariff, multiple taxes, and unexplained charges on services.”
The party argued that these policies have resulted in the “collapse of the productive sector, closure of millions of businesses, massive loss of jobs, rise in criminality, and general sense of misery across the country.”
The opposition also levelled serious corruption allegations against the ruling party, condemning what it described as “policy inconsistency, wholesale corruption, massive treasury-looting, budget padding, and diversion of public funds that pervade the Tinubu administration, resulting in infrastructural retrogression and loss of investors’ confidence in our system.”
Beyond policy criticisms, the PDP raised alarm over what it perceives as threats to Nigeria’s democratic system. The party stated it “stands in firm resistance to the sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-party totalitarian state, as evidenced in the desperate attempts to stifle and annihilate opposition parties through open siege, threats, and intimidation of opposition figures and institutions of democracy.”
The PDP attributed this alleged behaviour to the “APC’s mortal fear of inevitable defeat in 2027 due to its dismal failure in government.”
Despite these challenges, the PDP emphasised its internal cohesion, with the communiqué noting that “the successful convening of the 99th NEC meeting communicates our party’s unity and focus despite the challenges.”
The party announced that its National Convention will take place from Thursday, 28th to Saturday, 30th August 2025,” with key leadership positions to be filled through a democratic process.
Three state governors will lead the convention preparations: Governor Ahmadu Fintiri will chair the National Convention Committee, with Governor Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman and Governor Peter Mbah as Secretary.
The party also established a Zoning Committee to determine the allocation of national offices ahead of the convention. The committee will be led by Governor Douye Diri as Chairman, with Governor Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary.
An issue regarding the National Secretary position from the South East zone has been deferred to the next NEC meeting, scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.
Concluding its statement, the PDP sought to reassure the Nigerian public of its readiness to provide alternative leadership. “NEC reassures Nigerians that the PDP remains strong, resilient, united, and determined—now more than ever before—in leading the charge to rescue our nation from the vicious grip of the APC,” the party declared.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, stating its “belief in democracy, the rule of law, and the supremacy of the will of the people as expressed through their free and unhindered democratic participation in multi-party politics and governance.”
The PDP called on the Tinubu administration to “rescind all its anti-people policies and take practical steps to address the insecurity and economic recession in the country.”
