President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as the Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Ndidi’s appointment follows the expiration of the tenure of Haliru Nababa.

Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), announced the appointment in a statement on Friday, where he noted that it takes effect from December 15, 2024.

“The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has graciously approved the appointment of Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service following the expiration of the tenure of Haliru Nababa. His appointment takes effect from December 15, 2024,” the statement reads.

Ndidi, who was born on November 26, 1966, is from Oguta in Imo State. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Controller-General in charge of the Training and Staff Development Directorate.

He is a fellow of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and holds the national honour of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR).

President Tinubu urged Ndidi to leverage his experience to advance the goals of the service and implement impactful reforms.

The outgoing Controller-General, Haliru Nababa, was officially pulled out of service in a ceremony held at the NCoS headquarters on Friday.

While reflecting on his tenure, Nababa highlighted his inclusive management approach and the significant progress made under his leadership.

Nababa said, “I must say that the support and cooperation I received from my management team and field officers remained unwavering and qualitative. Thus, the Service was not only able to weather storms but significantly made progress in many fronts such as security, logistics, healthcare services, capacity building for staff, inmates’ welfare and training, staff promotion and a host of others.”

He credited his achievements to support from his management team and field officers.

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, and encouraged personnel to remain steadfast in their duties. “Resist actions of misguided personnel that tend to soil your good works and compromise the reputation of the Service,” he urged.

On his part, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, while speaking on Nababa’s retirement said, “As you close this chapter of distinguished service and step into a well-earned retirement, we celebrate your numerous achievements, and the positive impact you have made on countless lives.

“On behalf of President Bola Tinubu, I wish you a happy and fulfilling retirement, filled with good health and prosperity.

“I am confident that your legacy would continue to inspire and motivate the NCoS community.”
