Thunderstorm Cuts TCN Line In Enugu, Destroys House, Car
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a thunderstorm on Wednesday night caused the snapping of its 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line, resulting in damage to property along the line’s right-of-way.
According to the company, the incident occurred near Tower 97 when the conductor fell to the ground.
While no human lives were lost, the fallen line sparked a high-voltage discharge that razed a house built under the transmission line, burnt a car parked within the right-of-way, and killed two cows.
A statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, stated that the Regional Manager of TCN, Enugu Region, Engr. Tom Inugonum led a team to the site for an on-the-spot assessment.
The statement added that the company’s Quick Response Line Maintenance Team had commenced dismantling the damaged section in preparation for restringing a new conductor.
Despite the setback, TCN assured residents of Nsukka that power supply would not be disrupted.
“There has been no load loss to the Nsukka area as supply has been temporarily diverted through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC),” the company stated.
TCN also expressed concern over encroachments on transmission rights-of-way, warning that such activities remain hazardous.
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need to avoid building, parking, or engaging in activities within transmission lines’ Right of Way (RoW),” the statement stated further.
The company reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public safety while maintaining a stable and secure national grid.
