Six Killed, Nine Injured In Road Crash In Lagos
A fatal accident at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, Lagos, on Monday, claimed six lives and left nine others injured.
It was gathered that the victims included two men, three women, and a child. Nine survivors—three men and six women—were rescued and taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Epe, and Hammond Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FMC morgue for identification by their families. Four other passengers escaped unhurt.
Involved in the rescue operations were personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) — all of which worked collaboratively, ensuring rapid evacuation and immediate restoration of order at the scene.
The accident involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck loaded with wooden planks and a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, attributed the crash to excessive speeding and reckless driving.
“Preliminary investigation conducted by security operatives revealed that the accident which involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck conveying wooden planks and a white commercial bus (AKD 336 YD) was precipitated by excessive speeding and reckless driving infractions,” he said in a statement.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and lamented the continued disregard for traffic regulations by motorists.
Bakare-Oki warned that excessive speeding endangers lives, urging drivers to cultivate patience, discipline, and defensive driving habits, particularly during the Ember Months when vehicular movement typically increases.
He also dismissed claims that crashes during this period are caused by mystical forces, stressing that human error, recklessness, and poor judgment are the real causes.
Bakare-Oki commended the swift response of allied emergency agencies, including the FRSC, the NPF, and the LNSC, who worked with LASTMA to evacuate victims and restore order at the scene.
THE WHISTLER reports that on August 18, a driver died after a high-speed collision between a Toyota Highlander Jeep and a commercial bus at the Volkswagen area, inward Mile 2 area of Lagos.
The crash occurred when the Toyota Highlander, reportedly speeding, lost control and rammed into a T4 commercial bus. The bus was said to be illegally parked while picking up passengers along the corridor. The impact of the collision was so severe that the driver of the Highlander died instantly.
The incident happened a little above one week that at least five passengers sustained severe injuries on August 8 when a truck collided with a commercial bus at Toyota Bus Stop, inward Oshodi.
This was just after two weeks that five people died and five others sustained serious injuries in two separate crashes that occurred along the Lekki-Epe Expressway
