Taraba, World Bank strengthen primary healthcare with statewide logistics distribution

By Femi Bolaji

JALINGO — The World Bank-assisted Immunization Plus Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transformation Services (IMPACT) project, in collaboration with the Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency (TSPHCDA), has launched a statewide distribution of medical equipment and motorcycles for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) across all 16 local government councils.

The initiative aims to strengthen supervision, improve data management, and ensure timely service delivery across primary healthcare facilities in the state.

At the flag-off ceremony in Jalingo, TSPHCDA Executive Secretary, Tukura Nuhu Nyigwa, described the intervention as a strategic step to enhance healthcare operations. He explained that the motorcycles and equipment would support effective outreach, routine monitoring, and prompt reporting from primary healthcare centres.

The Programme Manager of the IMPACT Project in Taraba, Dr. Ubanus, noted that the initiative complements broader efforts to expand access to quality healthcare, particularly for women and children. He added that since its launch in January 2025, the project has upgraded and revitalized health facilities, producing measurable improvements across several local government areas.

Representing the World Bank, Task Team Lead of the IMPACT Project, Onoriode Ezire, commended the progress made and praised Governor Agbu Kefas for creating an enabling environment for these reforms. Dr. Ezire also urged local governments to take ownership of the refurbished facilities and reiterated the Bank’s commitment to supporting sustainable transformation in Taraba’s health sector.

The State Commissioner of Health, Bordiya Buma, during a symbolic presentation to select local government areas, described the exercise as a major boost to primary healthcare operations.

Additionally, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Taraba chapter, Moses Maihankali, noted that the project’s benefits are already visible across the state and pledged continued collaboration to sustain these gains.
