Tambuwal Condemns ‘Cruel’ Plateau Killings, Urges Swift Federal Action

Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has condemned in strong terms the latest round of violent attacks in Plateau State, describing them as “cruel, unjustified, and intolerable”.

In a statement posted via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed deep concern over the killings and the destruction of communities in the North-Central state.

“I strongly condemn the recent wave of horrific killings and destruction across communities in Plateau State. These senseless attacks are cruel, unjustified, and must never be tolerated.”

The senator, who has consistently advocated for peace and national unity, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the attacks. He expressed solidarity with the people of Plateau, calling the violence a “painful and trying time” for the victims and the nation as a whole.

He further urged the federal government to rise to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property, stressing the need for urgent and decisive action.

“The Federal Government must live up to its primary responsibility. I urge the security agencies to act swiftly and decisively. The perpetrators must be brought to justice. We cannot allow Nigeria to continue on this dangerous path of violence and impunity,” he said.

The latest violence in Plateau State, particularly in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas, has claimed dozens of lives and displaced hundreds. Reports indicate that armed assailants attacked several villages, setting homes ablaze, killing residents, and forcing survivors to flee.

This incident is one of several recurring attacks in Plateau, a state long plagued by ethno-religious tensions and conflicts over land and resource use. Over the years, clashes between farming communities and herders have escalated into deadly violence, with successive governments struggling to find lasting solutions.

Despite repeated security deployments and peace initiatives, attacks have persisted, often with limited accountability. Civil society groups and community leaders continue to call for increased intelligence, community engagement, and justice for victims.

Senator Tambuwal’s remarks add to growing national and international concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

As communities mourn their dead and grapple with the aftermath, the call for urgent and sustained intervention has never been louder.
