Suspected Al-Shabaab Fighters Kill Six Kenyan Policemen

At least six policemen were killed and four others injured in an attack on a police camp by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Garissa County, near Kenya’s border with Somalia, police reported.

The heavily armed attackers, believed to be members of Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group, launched the assault on Sunday morning, at Macawisley camp in Hagardera Sub-Location.

According to a police report, cited by Reuters, the militants used sophisticated weapons to overrun the camp, killing six officers and leaving four others wounded.

Security forces have been deployed to pursue the attackers, while the injured are receiving treatment at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) hospital.

The bodies of the deceased were transported to Hagardera for burial, the police said.

Al-Shabaab frequently conducts cross-border attacks in northeastern Kenya, targeting both security forces and civilians.

The militant group has been fighting for years to overthrow Somalia’s government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Authorities reported that Al-Shabaab fighters have established bases in Fafi Sub-County, conducting reconnaissance and surveillance operations in the area.

The attack highlights the ongoing security threat posed by the group, despite government efforts to combat their influence.

In response to the heightened security concerns, the U.S. embassy in Kenya, on Tuesday, issued a travel advisory to its citizens, warning against traveling to Garissa and counties near the Somalia border due to the risk of terrorism.

Macawisley, the police camp targeted in the attack, is home to a state-sponsored community vigilante group established to combat Al-Shabaab insurgents in northeastern Kenya.
