Veteran manager Jose Mourinho has expressed surprise at the growing trend of inexperienced coaches being appointed to the world’s biggest football clubs, questioning the logic behind such high-profile hires.
Speaking in a recent interview, Mourinho said, “For me, it’s just a surprise when coaches with no history, no body of work, get the chance to manage the world’s top clubs. It’s a real surprise.”
The former Chelsea, Manchester United, and Roma manager contrasted these appointments with clubs that favour proven experience. “When AC Milan hires Massimiliano Allegri or Juventus hires Luciano Spalletti, or Roma hires Gian Piero Gasperini, it’s never a surprise to me,” he added, highlighting his preference for coaches with a demonstrable track record.
Mourinho’s comments reflect a broader debate in football management circles over the balance between youth, innovation, and experience when appointing head coaches at elite clubs. Clubs are increasingly willing to take risks on younger or unproven managers, while some veterans argue that proven credentials should carry more weight.
The Portuguese tactician, renowned for his tactical acumen and managerial success across multiple European leagues, has repeatedly emphasised the importance of experience in navigating top-level pressures, including media scrutiny, squad management, and European competition.
Overall, Mourinho’s critique underscores the ongoing tension in football management between risk-taking and experience, prompting clubs, fans, and stakeholders to question whether ambition should outweigh a coach’s proven track record.
