State Creation: South-East Agitators Charged To Unify For Adada

Interest groups and agitators for the creation of additional states in the South-East region of Nigeria have been tasked to rally round the creation of Adada State from the region for equity and justice.

The Chairman of the Adada State Movement, Chief James Ugwu, made the appeal in an interview with THE WHISTLER in Enugu on Wednesday. He anchored his argument on the equation that the South East has northern and southern blocs. According to him, “the southern Igbo bloc already has three states while their northern counterpart has only two”.

In the words of Hon Ugwu, “My appeal to the Igbo leaders, particularly the southern Igbos, is to please see reasons and allow the creation of Adada State to make the northern Igbos have three states as the southern part already has three. That will be justice, and a measure to give everybody a sense of belonging.”

The chairman stated that when the equation is balanced, “we, as a region, can then ask for Etiti or Equity state”.

He continued, “When Adada is achieved, we will all jointly ask for Etiti or Equity State. It is unfair to allow the sixth state to go to the southern Igbos who already have three states; and expect us to work with them as a regional administration.”

He thanked the Senate Committee on Constitutional Reforms for the successful conduct of their public hearing which was held in Enugu last weekend.

He, however, added that, “I also expect them to ensure that any state request meets the provisions of Section 8 (1) A, B, C of the Nigerian constitution. Anything outside that should be thrown away as an unqualified request.

“Nigerians are watching the committee, particularly on the state agitations over unqualified requests being treated.”
