Speed Darlington Granted Bail After One Month
Nigerian rapper, Darlington Okoye, otherwise known as Speed Darlington, has been granted bail after a month in detention.
Darlington was arrested on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State, marking it his second detention within two months.
According to his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, the police arrested Darlington following a petition by Grammy Award artist, Burna Boy, for linking him to the sex trafficking allegation against embattled US rapper, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
The rapper had in a viral video suggested that Burna Boy might have had sexual relations with Combs to influence the latter’s Grammy win for “Best Global Music Album” for his “Twice As Tall” album in 2021.
One of Darlington’s counsel, Stan Alieke, had on December 9 confirmed that his client was formally charged in court.
“Akpi was not arraigned last week because the judges were at a conference, and by next week, the courts will shut down for the festive season until late January.
“This is why litigation is treated as a last resort after exhausting other options, including Alternative Dispute Resolution,” he said.
But in a post on Monday on his Instagram story, Alieke said the rapper has been released.
According to him, Darlington was granted bail by the court on Monday.
Alieke, who did not provide details of the bail condition, wrote, “Apki has been granted bail by the court.”
