Sokoto Governor Celebrates As Budget Director Emerges Most Outstanding Public Administrator

The Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has hailed the emergence of the state’s Director of Budget, Buhari Umar, as the 2024 Most Outstanding Public Administrator of the Year.
Umar who’s the Director of Budget at the Sokoto State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning emerged Champion Newspapers’ 2024 Most Outstanding Public Administrator of the Year, as announced in the past week.
The award according to the newspaper is to celebrate Umar’s outstanding leadership in public finance management, transparency, and effective policy execution, recognizing him as one of Nigeria’s leading figures in modern governance.
He has also been credited with tightening the budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and cutting costs to ensure the government meets its primary responsibilities.
Speaking on Sunday the Sokoto State government, through its Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad Zayana, described the honour as a “well-earned tribute to a man who has made excellence his standard and service his calling.”
He said under Umar’s stewardship, the Sokoto State budgeting process has undergone significant transformation, aligning fiscal strategies with development priorities and improving socio-economic outcomes across the state.
The commissioner acknowledged his discipline and analytical depth, stating that Umar has consistently promoted prudent resource allocation and transparency in public expenditure.

A Fellow of the Les Aspin Center for Governance and Anti-Corruption in Washington, D.C., USA, Umar is widely admired for his visionary approach to participatory governance and people-centered policy design.
He is known for his calm demeanor under pressure and his ability to deliver measurable results.
His recognition by Champion Newspapers comes at a critical time when state governments across Nigeria are being called upon to enhance financial accountability and drive inclusive growth.
