Snap, Meta Gear up Competition, set to Unveil AR Glasses in September
Tech competitors Snapchat and Meta appear to be gearing up for an eventful September as they both intend to introduce their augmented reality (AR) devices.
When Evan Spiegel, the CEO of Snap, turned down Mark Zuckerberg’s $2 billion takeover offer for Meta, it was the last time we saw Snap and Meta at odds.
Both companies plan to showcase their new augmented reality devices in September at different events, according to The Verge’s Command Line newsletter.
The company intends to keep using Snapchat’s lite AR integrations while stepping up its use of immersive interactions and content through smart glasses.
According to reports, Spiegel will make a major announcement about the fifth generation of Spectacles on September 17 at the Partner Summit in Los Angeles.
According to a blog post from Snap, the updated Spectacles (shown in the image below) will vastly outperform the previous model’s 26.3° diagonal field of view and 30-minute battery life.
Mark Zuckerberg of Meta is scheduled to launch the Orion spectacles at the Connect conference in Menlo Park on September 25, just one week from that.
With this disclosure, Meta is moving from their existing line of Ray-Ban smart glasses (seen in the image below) to full-fledged AR products.
The Orion AR glasses, according to Meta, promise “high field-of-view immersion,” which suggests a large display area for digital material.
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth added that Orion glasses from Meta may be “the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain.”
We earlier reported that TikTok is allegedly testing a new reward system that will keep users on the platform for far longer. This system is comparable to Snapchat.
