Six More Deaths Confirmed In Lagos Tower Fire
United Capital Plc has confirmed the deaths of six of its employees in the tragic fire that swept through Afriland Towers on Tuesday, bringing the official death toll from the incident to at least ten.
The financial services firm, which occupies the 3rd and 4th floors of the commercial high-rise, announced the loss in a statement issued Thursday morning.
Describing the deceased as an integral part of the company and family, United Capital expressed deep sorrow and pledged support to the grieving families.
“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Pic announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues, following the tragic fire at Afriland Towers, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
“Our departed colleagues were an integral part of our company and family. Their painful loss leaves an immeasurable void.
“We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones, and we continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as providing all the support we can to them during this most difficult time,” the company said.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) confirmed that four of its staff members also died in the fire.
United Capital said it is making arrangements for a memorial service to honour the lives of the six employees, praising the emergency services for their assistance during the crisis.
“We are making preparations for an appropriate memorial service to honour their lives and mark their passing with dignity and solemnity.
“We thank the emergency services and all those who responded for their valiant assistance at the time of the incident.
“In this moment of untold grief, we stand together in solidarity, drawing strength from one another as we navigate this period.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” the company added.
Afriland Properties Plc in a statement on Tuesday regretted the fire incident, saying that investigation has commenced to ascertain the circumstances rounding the fire outbreak.
“From the moment the incident was reported, the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service and other emergency services were promptly alerted and on the scene to contain the fire and coordinate rescue efforts. Their swift intervention was instrumental in mitigating further damage and managing the situation.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to their families and loved ones,” the firm said.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the fire originated from the inverter room in the basement of the building, which houses offices.
According to the Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ogabi Olajide, the incident was reported at 13:38 hours, prompting an immediate response from fire crews stationed at Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu.
Heavy smoke quickly spread across multiple floors of the building, forcing a chaotic evacuation of people within the building.
