Sinner, Gauff Qualify For French Open Semi-Finals

Jannik Sinner booked a place in the French Open semi-finals with a ruthless 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Alexander Bublik on Wednesday.

The Italian produced a dominant performance to continue his impressive form at Roland Garros; he is yet to drop a set in the tournament.

He broke Bublik six times and saved the only two break points he faced.

The victory extended Sinner’s run to 19 matches after winning the US Open last year and the Australian Open in January.

Sinner is the youngest man to win as many successive matches at majors since Rafael Nadal in 2008.

He is also the third youngest male player to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the French Open in back-to-back years after Jim Courier and Mats Wilander.

Sinner was full of praise for Bublik while expressing his excitement at the opportunity to advance in the tournament.

He said, “Well, we played already a couple of times before, so we know a little what to expect. But you know the way with him; you never know what’s happening.

“I feel like he deserves to be in the quarter-finals; he beat very, very tough players. So I just tried to stay focused from my side of the court and just tried to play as solid as possible because he can have some slight ups and downs.

“So I just tried to stay consistent throughout the match. I’m trying to serve very well in important moments, which I’ve done.

“So yeah, it was a good performance from my side because it’s also a bit windy and breezy, so things can be very complicated. Today, I warmed up with the roof closed because it was raining, then the sun came out, so there were a lot of different challenges on court, but I’m very happy.”

Sinner will take on Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev in the semi-final on Thursday.

In the women’s category, world number two Coco Gauff earned a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maddison Keys to advance in the tournament.

She admitted that Keys gave her a tough run for her money in the encounter.

Gauff said: “It wasn’t an easy match, and I’m very happy to get through it

“[Keys] is obviously a very great player, and her forehand is probably one of the best, if not the best, on tour.

“I knew that I just had to be able to run today. As soon as the ball came short, I knew I had to punish her for it.”

World number 361 Lois Boisson continued her fairytale run at the French Open with another stunning 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 victory over world number six Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday.

She has now defeated three seeded players on her way to the last four of the tournament, where she will face Coco Gauff on Thursday.

Boisson credited hard work as the reason for her impressive run at Roland Garros.

She said, “I think every kid who plays tennis has the dream to win a Grand Slam.

“I will go for the dream, because my dream is to win it, not to be in the semi-final. So I will try to do my best for it. I don’t think it’s a miracle.

“I’ve had a little bit of luck, but I think it’s just the hard work that I put in since I started playing tennis and also last year with my rehab and everything. It’s the result of hard work. Nothing else.”

Boisson became the first player in the Open Era to reach the women’s singles semi-finals at the French Open as a wildcard and the first French semi-finalist since Marion Bartoli in 2011.
