Segun Sowunmi Challenges Wike to Resign and Join PDP’s Presidential Race

Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has challenged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to resign and pursue his perceived presidential ambition on the platform of the party, news.ng reports.

In a recent video podcast, Mic On, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Sowunmi, a former governorship candidate in Ogun State, while commending Wike for galvanising the recently held PDP national convention, which was viewed as a success, said the ongoing developments in the party present a fresh challenge for its members.

He said, “Let me tell you the opportunity. Let me tell you the only opportunity on the table. Technically, it’s actually my side that won. I was the one who was shouting that his secretary is going to go. So, we won.”

Although Wike’s faction of the PDP may have successfully organised a convention, Sowunmi, who admitted he is not happy, said the party now faces the task of choosing a flag bearer, a role Wike should make himself available to fill. However, he noted that it is a dicey situation for the immediate past Governor of Rivers State.

“I’m unhappy because the reality of our win… has brought about a need for us to now look deeply at what must be the next game.

“The next game on the table will be for Nyesom Wike to retire from this APC government he’s serving, pick the presidential ticket of the PDP, and give it his best shot,” he said.

Justifying his call for Wike to make himself available, the PDP chieftain recalled that Wike had always wanted to be president.

He, therefore, charged the FCT Minister to fully return to the party and contest for the presidency.

“You know why? Because he wanted to be president in 2023 anyway. If he’s brave enough to retire from their party, come and make himself a presidential candidate, find some smart guy from the North to be his vice, run it, at least they’ll put up a fight,” he said.
