The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has stressed the critical role of a robust, inclusive, and innovative capital market in driving Nigeria’s economic stability and resilience.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Institute of Capital Market Registrars (ICMR) in Lagos, the SEC’s Director-General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, highlighted the Commission’s focus on enhancing the regulatory framework for venture capital and private equity firms as a cornerstone for financial growth and stability.

Agama, delivering his keynote address titled “Enhancing Financial Stability in the Nigerian Economy: Strategic role of the capital market in wealth creation,” stressed the importance of the capital market in wealth generation and its potential to anchor Nigeria’s financial future.

“Nigeria, as one of Africa’s largest economies, has faced significant challenges such as declining oil prices, inflation, and currency fluctuations, which have tested our resilience. The capital market serves as the backbone of economic health, playing a critical role in fostering wealth creation and stability,” he stated.

Highlighting the need for a resilient economy driven by local investments, Agama revealed SEC’s commitment to strengthening regulations for venture capital and private equity firms.

“A robust venture capital and private equity sector will empower Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and attract much-needed capital into the economy.

“By investing locally, we reduce reliance on foreign capital and build self-sufficiency, which is critical during global economic uncertainties,” Agama said.

Agama noted that the capital market plays a transformative role by channeling domestic savings into productive investments. This process not only stimulates economic activities but also creates wealth and job opportunities while advancing financial inclusion.

“The capital market provides a structured environment where savings are mobilized into investments that build businesses and support infrastructure projects. This is fundamental to creating a stable and inclusive economic landscape,” he explained.

Agama also emphasized the importance of modernizing the capital market through technology and innovation. He praised the SEC’s efforts in integrating fintech solutions and regulatory sandboxes to foster technological advancements.

“Our youthful and tech-savvy population is a tremendous asset. By aligning market innovations with local needs, we can harness this demographic dividend to drive financial inclusion,” he noted.

Agama disclosed that the SEC recently granted approval-in-principle to two fintech companies, with others in the pipeline.

Agama urged stakeholders to work collaboratively in building a capital market that fosters wealth creation, economic stability, and sustainable growth.

“By channeling our resources into Nigerian enterprises, we are investing in the future of our nation. Let us commit to creating a capital market that serves as a source of opportunity and prosperity for all Nigerians,” he said.
