Saraki Committee Optimistic After Meeting Enugu Governor Over PDP Crisis
The Special Reconciliation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, met with the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Friday as part of ongoing efforts to address internal crises within the party.
The high-powered delegation, which included former governors Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa) and Dr Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe), was received at the Enugu Government House by Governor Mbah.
The visit marks the committee’s first in a series of consultations aimed at ensuring a smooth and peaceful National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and proposed national convention.
Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting, Saraki underscored the strategic importance of the South-East region to the PDP and praised Governor Mbah’s leadership.
“We are members of the PDP Reconciliation and Strategy Committee that was set up recently by the PDP Governors’ Forum to work towards ensuring that our upcoming National Executive Council meeting and also likely convention are rancour-free and work smoothly,” Saraki said.
“In line with that, we are here in Enugu State to consult with one of our leaders, Governor Peter Mbah, who is the leader of the South-East PDP. This is the first state we are coming to because we appreciate the importance of the South East in our PDP family.”
He continued, “As you all know, the South East has played a key role as the bedrock of the popularity and the strength of our party. In recognition of that, we are here to consult with him and, first, to commend him on the leadership role he has been playing in the party.
“More importantly, to commend what he is doing in Enugu State, which is a reflection for Nigerians to see what happens when you have a PDP government.”
Dr Saraki expressed optimism about the future of the party following what he described as “very useful” discussions.
“We have had a very good discussion. Frankly, we have had a very, very useful discussion. We are going away with some of the suggestions that we have here and hopefully work on that,” he said.
“With this, we can say here in Enugu, we laid the foundation for a greater new PDP that is coming. What we have also seen today is that there is nothing insurmountable in the challenge ahead, and the spirit, the commitment of all of us—especially our leaders—is very, very inspiring.”
Governor Mbah, in his remarks, thanked the committee for its visit and reaffirmed his commitment to the unity and growth of the PDP, particularly in the South-East.
Also, Dankwambo expressed optimism, noting, “We remain committed to fostering unity, dialogue, and a rancour-free environment within our party, in line with the mandate of our committee.
“We have been warmly received by His Excellency, Peter Mbah, whose support and leadership are vital as we work towards strengthening our party and ensuring a peaceful, inclusive transition.”
The PDP is preparing for its NEC meeting and the crucial National Convention scheduled for August in Kano.
The Reconciliation Committee is expected to continue its consultations with other key stakeholders across the country.
