Russia Arrests 21-Year-Old German Over Alleged Plot To Sabotage Rail Line
Russian authorities have detained a 21-year-old German-Russian citizen accused of planning to sabotage a railway line under instructions from Ukrainian intelligence, the Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Tuesday, as reported by Russian news agencies.
In a statement by the FSB, the suspect allegedly “prepared the sabotage of a section of railway line in the city of Nizhny Novgorod with an explosive device” in return for a “financial reward”.
The FSB claims to have uncovered “means of communication” at the suspect’s residence, revealing messages exchanged with an SBU operative.
The arrest followed the detention of another German citizen, Nikolai Gaiduk, in the Kaliningrad region weeks earlier after being accused of attempting to sabotage energy infrastructure.
He was also reported to have received materials and orders to target a Ukrainian national in Hamburg.
Since the February 22 invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, a lot of persons have been arrested for allegedly sabotaging the country’s efforts in the war.
Germany’s foreign ministry recently confirmed that at least 12 German citizens are currently imprisoned in Russia, while other Western nationals are also held up at various prisons.
The Russia and Ukraine war worsened last month after the U.S. lifted its ban on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles.
In response, Vladimir Putin, signed into law changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, lowering the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.
Talks on a possible ceasefire are expected to begin soon but Biden has vowed to put Ukraine in the best possible position at the negotiation table before his tenure relapses.
