…Unveils Bursary Payment Plan

The Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, Chijioke Ihunwo, in a bid to promote education and support indigent, has awarded grants to 100 indigent students of Obio/Akpor extraction.

The grant, which is part of Ihunwo’s educational policy thrust, aims to support students in their academic pursuits, particularly those who have given up on their dreams due to financial constraints.

Speaking during the grant award ceremony, Ihunwo explained that the grant is not limited to indigenes of Obio/Akpor, but also includes non-indigenes who live and work in the LGA.

He noted that the scheme is designed to be fair, transparent, and inclusive, with beneficiaries selected through a rigorous screening process.

Master’s students received ₦250,000 each, while PhD students received ₦350,000 each.

Ihunwo emphasized that the grant will be issued in phases throughout his three-year tenure, with the next batch expected to start in September this year.

In addition to the grant, Ambassador Ihunwo also unveiled plans to start paying bursaries to Obio/Akpor students in tertiary institutions. A committee has been set up to oversee the bursary payment, which will commence next week.

The committee, which will be chaired by the supervisor for education, Mrs Abigail Chiorlu-Ejukwa, will identify authentic students and ensure that the bursary payment is fair and transparent.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including the vice chairman of the council, Mrs Sophia Amarachi Nkoro, the deputy leader of Obio/Akpor legislative council, Rt. Hon. Kelvin Nwanwa, and the special adviser to the governor on Civil Society Relations, Hon. Achor Nna.

In his remarks, Dr. Darlington Orji, immediate past CTC chairman of Ikwerre local government, praised Ambassador Ihunwo’s achievements, noting that he has always set the pace for others.

Dr. Orji commended Ambassador Ihunwo for his commitment to education and his efforts to support indigent students. He encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity and to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits.

The highpoint of the occasion was the donation of an artificial leg to a former Chief Press Secretary of Obio/Akpor local government, Mr Vincent Wagbara.

The grant award ceremony was part of Ambassador Ihunwo’s efforts to mark his 100 days in office. The event was witnessed by friends of the Executive Chairman, invited guests, and members of the press.
