Putin Vows To Stop Ukraine From Getting Nuclear Weapons

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has vowed to resist any attempt by Ukraine to get nuclear weapons as hostilities between both countries continue.

Putin, who made this known during the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) summit, said Moscow will use “all means of destruction at Russia’s disposal” were Ukraine to ever get hold of nuclear weapons, according to Russia’s state-run news agency RIA Novosti.

“We will not allow this,” he added.

His remarks followed last week’s media reports suggesting the possibility that U.S President Joe Biden could help Ukraine before he leaves office in January.

Putin said that Russia struck Ukraine overnight with 90 missiles and 100 drones which hit Ukraine’s power grid leaving over one million people without electricity in the country.

According to Putin, the attack was in response to the involvement of “western countries” in its war with Ukraine.

He threatened to attack decision-making centres in Kyiv with Oreshnik, the new ballistic missile Russia used to attack the Ukrainian city of Dnipro last week.

Biden had lifted the restriction on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles against Russia, allowing Ukraine to fire the MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMs) into Russia.

According to him, the use of Western-supplied missiles against Russia amounted to “direct involvement of Western countries” in the conflict and carried “risks”.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine’s energy grid was massive, however, authorities in Kyiv have claimed all missiles targeting the Ukrainian capital were intercepted despite reports of damages in surrounding areas.

In a statement, the Ukrainian air force said out of 188 “aerial means of attack” – missiles and drones launched by Russia, it intercepted 76 Kalibr cruise missiles, three Kh-59/Kh-69 missiles and 35 drones.

“The enemy’s missile and drone attack targeted Ukraine’s energy facilities,” the statement said.
