Paris Saint-Germain enter Saturday’s Champions League final in Munich as the tournament favourites, but they face a formidable challenge from the experienced Italian powerhouse Inter Milan.
This European showpiece represents a fascinating collision between contrasting footballing philosophies. On one side stands a wealthy modern franchise backed by state investment, while on the other lies a traditional European heavyweight with decades of continental pedigree.
Despite massive financial investment over the years, PSG remain without European football’s most coveted prize. This marks only their second appearance in the competition’s showpiece event since Qatar’s acquisition of the Parisian club in 2011.
Their previous final appearance came during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, where they suffered defeat to Bayern Munich in an empty Lisbon stadium, despite boasting the attacking talents of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
The subsequent addition of Lionel Messi to their star-studded forward line paradoxically coincided with their most disappointing European campaigns of recent years. Their current path to Munich has materialised in the first season following the departures of both Mbappe and the Argentine legend.
Mbappe’s transfer to reigning champions Real Madrid was motivated by his desire to claim this very trophy. Meanwhile, Luis Enrique has orchestrated a remarkable transformation in Paris, building around a youthful squad with an average age below 24 that has captivated European audiences.
Their journey began shakily with a November defeat in this same Munich venue against Bayern, leaving them precariously positioned in the new league phase format. However, a spectacular January victory over defending champions Manchester City sparked an extraordinary run that saw them eliminate three Premier League opponents – Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal – to reach this stage.
Ousmane Dembele has emerged as their key attacking threat with 33 goals across all competitions, supported effectively by Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, and winter acquisition Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Key figures like Achraf Hakimi, the former Inter defender who has established himself among world football’s elite fullbacks, and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma have been instrumental in securing both domestic French trophies this season.
“We know what kind of football we want to play and now we just need to go out and do it to our full potential,” said their Spanish coach, who is looking to win his second Champions League title, a decade after leading Messi’s Barcelona to glory in Berlin.
“It is always very difficult to get to the final of the Champions League. All players and coaches dream of playing in it, but most don’t get the chance.
“We want to be the first ones in Paris to win the Champions League and make history.”
Victory would establish them as only the second French club to claim European football’s premier prize. Interestingly, Marseille’s 1993 triumph also took place in Munich at the former Olympic Stadium, where they defeated AC Milan, Inter’s cross-city rivals.
Inter Milan arrive seeking their fourth European Cup, aiming to add to their consecutive victories under Helenio Herrera in the 1960s and their 2010 success against Bayern in Madrid under Jose Mourinho’s guidance.
Simone Inzaghi leads the Nerazzurri, having previously guided them to the 2022 final, where they narrowly lost to Manchester City. As many as eight players from that Istanbul encounter could feature again in this Munich showdown, where Inter have already competed this season.
Inzaghi’s team overcame Bayern in the quarter-finals before conquering Barcelona in a memorable semi-final, particularly the extraordinary second leg played in torrential rain at San Siro.
“To really make history, we have to win on Saturday,” said Inzaghi, whose likely starting eleven will include three players aged 36 or above.
Inter’s preferred 3-5-2 system presents a stark tactical contrast to PSG’s 4-3-3 approach, setting up an intriguing strategic battle. The Italian side will be motivated to bounce back after losing the Serie A title to Napoli on the season’s final day.
“We know that it will be difficult, we know that we’re facing a super team just like Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but they will come up against a team which has the same goal as PSG. All we can do is try put in a great performance in the final,” he added.
