PSC Prepares To Recruit 30,000 Police Officers In 2025
Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General Hashimu Argungu, said the commission is finalising preparations for the recruitment of 30,000 cadets and constables into the Nigeria Police Force in 2025.
Argungu made this known on Wednesday during a visit to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) in Abuja, where he sought collaboration on the forthcoming recruitment exercise.
The PSC chairman, while addressing the NDPC leadership, noted the importance of credible data to the recruitment process. He explained that data-driven verification would be critical in ensuring only qualified and suitable candidates are enlisted into the force.
“Data rules the world,” he said. “We can plan and ensure that proper background checks will be received on all the applicants who are desirous of a career in the Nigeria Police Force.”
Argungu appealed for assistance from the data protection commission to support the PSC in vetting applicants. “We are here to fortify the Commission in its recruitment exercises. We need to know who we are recruiting and we want to partner with you to make it a success,” he said.
According to him, the Commission will soon commence the annual recruitment of 30,000 constables as approved by President Bola Tinubu, alongside cadets.
However, the PSC chairman expressed concern over the Commission’s inability to access the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database. He noted that such access was critical to fulfilling the Commission’s constitutional responsibility of recruiting Nigerians into the police force.
Argungu, therefore, appealed to the NDPC’s National Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji, to intervene and facilitate the PSC’s access to the identity of prospective recruits.
Responding, Olatunji assured the PSC of his support and promised to facilitate the necessary access to the database to ensure an effective and credible recruitment process.
He also pledged to train PSC staff on data protection protocols to guarantee a secure and reliable recruitment exercise.
PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, said both organisations resolved to establish a joint committee to immediately begin work on strengthening data protection measures, in line with global best practices.
