Police Investigate Video Of Lagos Students Smoking, Drinking In School

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a group of students, reportedly from Excel College, Ejigbo, engaging in smoking, drinking, and dancing within what appears to be a school dormitory.

The video, which surfaced on social media earlier this week, quickly sparked outrage.

The footage, believed to have been recorded in April 2025, shows several male students engaging in acts deemed inappropriate.

In a statement on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case from the Ejigbo Police Division.

According to her, the principal of Excel College, who also serves as the proprietor, was invited for questioning and claimed that the students involved had already graduated from the school. Nonetheless, the school is reportedly cooperating fully with investigators.

“The school management is cooperating fully with investigators from the SCID to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“All parties are working collaboratively to ensure that such disturbing and inappropriate behavior does not recur within the school environment.

“Investigation is currently ongoing as mentioned above, and the outcome will be made public.

“The Lagos State Police Command calls on all secondary school authorities, both public and private, as well as parents and guardians, to take proactive steps in properly supervising and guiding their children and wards.

“They are urged to instill in them the importance of maintaining good behavior, upholding moral values, and avoiding any form of misconduct or vices that may lead to public outrage or disruption of peace within academic institutions and the society at large,” Adebisi said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education weighed in on the matter.

In a statement, the Commissioner Jamiu Alli-Balogun described the video as “disturbing” and confirmed that the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has begun a parallel investigation.

“We wish to inform the public that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSE), via the relevant agency, Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), is fully aware of the content of the video and has commenced a thorough investigation into the matter.

“Our Monitoring and Investigation team has been dispatched to verify the authenticity of the video, confirm the identities of those involved, and determine the level of institutional oversight.

“Preliminary engagements have also begun with the school authorities to gather all relevant facts, and any school found culpable will face appropriate sanctions in line with Lagos State education policies and regulations.

“The safety, well-being, and moral values of all students remain paramount to the Lagos State Government. We are committed to ensuring that all learning environments are safe, disciplined, and conducive to the academic and moral growth of every learner,” the Commissioner said.
