The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that gunmen invaded Ajebo Community near Agbowa in the Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA of the state, describing the story as “mischievous, untrue, and misleading”.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, the Command faulted a publication by a news platform (not THE WHISTLER) alleging that armed hoodlums stormed the community, injured residents, looted properties, and fired gunshots indiscriminately.

According to the statement, the disturbance in the area resulted from a land dispute between two families within the community, not an attack by gunmen.

The police said the disagreement caused temporary chaos, prompting a swift response from joint police intervention teams, including Tactical Squads, PMF Anti-Riot personnel, officers from Agbowa Division, Area N Command, and other units.

The Command said normalcy was quickly restored, and residents resumed their daily activities without further unrest.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the disturbance and clashes within the village stemmed from a land dispute between two contending families, and not an attack by gunmen against the community. No life was lost and no injuries were inflicted on anyone or the people of the village before and during the clashes before normalcy was restored and is currently being sustained,” the statement read.

Police have identified the leaders of the two families involved in the land clash and issued them invitations to report to the Commissioner’s office for further investigation.

They were also warned to maintain peace or face the full weight of the law.

“The leadership of the two parties involved in the land dispute has been identified and served Police invitations to report for investigation at the office of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, immediately. They have been strongly warned to remain peaceful and that the Police will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law on troublemakers,” the statement added.

Jimoh urged members of the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and cautioned media practitioners against publishing unverified reports that could trigger panic.

He reassured residents of Ajebo community and Lagos State at large of the Command’s commitment to ensuring peace, security, and order across the state.
