The Lagos State Police Command has commenced the enforcement of the mandatory minimum Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance, which took effect on February 1.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, emphasised that all vehicle owners in the state are required to have at least a valid third-party insurance policy.

The Command urged those without any form of insurance to obtain one immediately, warning that non-compliance would attract strict enforcement actions, including fines, penalties, or both.

“In line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., the Lagos State Police Command has embarked on enforcing the mandatory minimum of Third Party Motor Vehicle Insurance with effect from February 1st, 2025.

“Vehicle owners in Lagos State are required to possess a minimum of valid third-party insurance. Those without any class of insurance are advised to get insured immediately.

“The Nigeria Police Force cautions vehicle owners and operators against non-compliance with this essential regulation. Failure of which will result in strict enforcement actions, including fines, penalties or both.

“This initiative aims to ensure vehicle owners comply with stipulated insurance requirements to protect themselves and other road users,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, has directed officers involved in the enforcement exercise to remain professional, courteous, and firm in carrying out their duties.

He also warned that any form of incivility toward members of the public will not be tolerated.

“The public is enjoined to cooperate with the police as this crucial enforcement exercise is a win-win situation for all,” the statement added.
